Remember when you didn't have to plan to see your friends?

In college, I saw the same people almost every day. We had the same classes, ate in the same dining hall, and lived down the hall from each other. I don't think we were having life-changing conversations back then. We just kept running into each other, and somewhere along the way that turned into friendship. There's a reason the Friends crew was always at Central Perk.

Then life spreads everyone out with new jobs, new neighborhoods and new cities. Most adult friendships don't end with a fight, they just fade once we stop seeing each other. When I came home to the Bay, I'd meet someone great, mean to text them, and then a long week would happen.

Cheliad brings back the part college got right. You see the same people on the same night every week, and you only have to plan it once. Your phones go quiet, so you're actually there for it.

Why it matters

It turns out your friends are good for your health too.

200 hrsroughly what it takes to become close friends

Harvard has been following the same group of people since 1938, which makes it one of the longest studies on happiness ever done. When they looked at who was healthiest at 80, the answer wasn't cholesterol. It was how happy people were in their relationships at 50.

The World Health Organization says about 1 in 6 people worldwide are lonely. Close friendships also take time, to the tune of roughly 200 hours according to one study. In college, those hours added up without anyone trying. As adults, we have to make room for them. That's what Cheliad is for.

How it works

One night a week. Five small steps.

  1. Photo: three ways to sign up

    Pick your way in.

Solo, with a friend or two, or with your group.

  2. Photo: a piece on a keyring

    Get your piece.

Everyone gets a small piece that lives on your keys. It's the only thing you need to bring.

  3. Photo: the weekly card in a group chat

    Draw the card.

Each week a card lands in your group chat with a spot to go and a question to start with.

  4. Photo: pieces linked, a phone tapping in

    Tap in.

Link your pieces on the table and tap your phone. Your phones go quiet for the night. Maps, rides and calls from family still get through.

  5. Photo: the crew leaderboard

    Keep the streak.

Every night your crew meets, your crew's streak goes up, and so does your own. The top 5 crews in the city make the leaderboard. Miss a week and your streak pauses. It never resets.

I've lived in a handful of cities, spent two years in Eastern Europe, and visited almost 30 countries. Everywhere I went, people were longing for connection. Cheliad is just enough tech to get you off your tech, and back to the people at your table.

Questions

Before you sign up

Is this an app?

There's a small one, for your streaks, the top 5 leaderboard, and picking what can still reach you while you're tapped in. It doesn't find friends for you.

How is this different from dinners with strangers?

Honestly, I love those dinners. They're one of the easiest ways to get out of the house and meet someone new. Cheliad is for what happens after that first night, when you'd like to see those people again. You can bring the friends you met there, and your table keeps meeting every week until it just feels normal.

Who runs the night?

You do. We just made the game.

I'm coming alone. Will it be awkward?

You'll sit with people who already know each other and saved a seat for someone new. The card has the first question, so nobody has to come up with one.

What happens to my phone?

It stays with you. It just goes quiet for a couple of hours, and you pick what still gets through.

What if I miss a night?

Life happens. Your streak pauses, and your crew will be there next week.

When and where?

One night a week in San Francisco, Nov 16 to Dec 18, with Thanksgiving week off. Your table picks the night, and the card suggests a spot.

Can I use my piece on other days?

Yes. Tap it at your desk when you want some quiet to get things done.

Season one is small on purpose.

It's me, a box of pieces, and 8 crews in San Francisco. If it works, you'll see it here first. Sign-ups close Nov 11.
